How to build a booking app for salons, clinics and services
Booking apps look easy until two customers book the same slot. Getting that one case right is most of the engineering.

A booking app turns a phone call into a few taps. The flow is short. The rules behind it, availability, buffers, cancellations and staff schedules, are where the work is.
The core flow
- Choose a service and, if relevant, a staff member.
- See real free slots, based on working hours and existing bookings.
- Confirm, and pay or leave a deposit if you charge one.
- Get a confirmation and reminders before the appointment.
- Cancel or reschedule within your rules, then leave a review afterwards.
The case that breaks apps: two people, one slot
If two customers tap the same slot at the same moment, both can succeed unless the server prevents it. The check must happen on the server, in a single operation that claims the slot or fails.
sql-- one row per bookable slot
UPDATE slots
SET booked_by = :customer_id
WHERE id = :slot_id AND booked_by IS NULL;
-- if no row was updated, someone else got there firstCheck how many rows were changed. If it is zero, tell the customer the slot was just taken and offer the next ones.
Details that matter
- Time zones and daylight rules, even for a local business, if staff or customers travel.
- Buffers between appointments and different durations per service.
- Holds: reserve a slot for a few minutes while a customer pays.
- Reminders on the channel your customers read, with an easy cancel link.
Our booking systems and mobile app pages describe how we scope scheduling products.
Common questions
- What features does a booking app need first?
- Service selection, available time slots, confirmation, a way to cancel or reschedule, and reminders. Payments and reviews can follow.
- How do I stop double bookings?
- Make the slot claim atomic on the server, so only one request can take a slot, and show the loser a clear message and alternatives.
- Should reminders use WhatsApp or SMS?
- Use the channel your customers read. Many Indian businesses use WhatsApp for reminders, with SMS or push as backup.
This is what we do
